Afghanistan U19 World Cup warm-up games canceled due to visa delays

The Afghan U19 years World Championship The campaign was discontinued due to visa delays. The team has yet to arrive in the West Indies and the planned warm-up games have now been canceled. Afghanistan’s warm-up games took place on January 10th and 12th in St. Kitts & Nevis and St. Paul’s against England and the United Arab Emirates.

Afghanistan is in Group C along with Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea. The team will play their first game against Zimbabwe on January 16, followed by games against Papua New Guinea and Pakistan on January 18 and 20, respectively.

ICC event director Chris Tetley confirmed in an official notice that they are holding talks with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and other stakeholders on the matter. The ICC is expected to resolve this issue in the next few days. The warm-up games have also been postponed so that the team, which is already in the West Indies, can prepare for the upcoming tournament.

“We worked with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue and enable the team to travel,” Tetley said in an official statement.

“In the meantime we have postponed the warm-up games to ensure that the teams in the region can continue their preparations before the tournament starts on January 14.”

Scotland replaced New Zealand in the U19 World Cup

New Zealand withdrew its name from the tournament last November due to quarantine issues related to Covid-19. Scotland, which missed qualifying in Europe, have replaced New Zealand in Group D, which includes Sri Lanka, the West Indies and Australia.

The U19 World Cup begins on January 14th and lasts until February 5th. The tournament consists of 16 teams divided into four groups. The two best teams in each group qualify for the knockout round of the Super League. The remaining teams play in the plate competition for places nine to 16, which is held at the same time as the main tournament. Bangladesh won the last edition of the tournament after losing India by three wickets.
