AIADMK top leader K Palaniswami criticized Prime Minister MK Stalin for NEET on Wednesday and called on the DMK government to take steps to fulfill its election promise to exclude Tamil Nadu from the scope of the national test.
In the run-up to the parliamentary elections on April 6, DMK boss Stalin promised steps to abolish the test within “24 hours” of taking power, Palaniswami said in a statement. However, the announcement of the exam date (September 12, 2021) was a “clap of thunder” for students who believed the words of the prime minister and ministers and were not prepared for the exam as they expected NEET to be abolished, he said.

The high-ranking AIADMK leader, who is also the leader of the opposition in the assembly, accused the DMK of using NEET as an “election gimmick” and distracting people against the “Amma government” on this issue. Recalling the steps taken during the OIADMK regime to exempt the state from the scope of the test, Palaniswami accused the DMK government of failing to take reasonable steps to abolish the test in relation to Tamil Nadu.
The AIADMK guide also listed initiatives like the 7.5 percent reservation on government students completing NEET on medical admissions and the establishment of 17 new state medical colleges in a decade of his partisan rule.

When in opposition, DMK had often targeted AIADMK for failing to take steps to abolish NEET in its Tamil Nadu motion, and this was one of the issues raised during the Stalin-led party elections were highlighted. After DMK came to power in May, DMK formed a panel led by retired Supreme Court Justice AK Rajan to investigate the effects of NEET in Tamil Nadu. After examining the recommendations of the body that submitted its report to the government on Wednesday, Stalin had promised to take appropriate action.
Major parties in Tamil Nadu have repeatedly stated that the national test is directed against principles of social justice, against students from rural areas, backward communities and state schools.
