All universities postpone semester exams indefinitely as Covid-19 and Omicron cases increase in India

NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu government announced that the university semester exams scheduled for the end of this month have been postponed indefinitely due to the Covid-19 situation. University Minister K Ponmudi said the decision was made after a meeting with Prime Minister MK Stalin.

Previously, the University of Madras had postponed all semester exams, which are scheduled to start on January 21. The regular practical exams, which began January 3, have also been postponed, the Times of India reported. The decision was made due to the rise in Covid-19 and Omicron cases in India.

Education Minister K Ponmudi reportedly said: “All university exams will be postponed indefinitely due to rising Covid numbers. The revised schedule will be announced later. “

“A circular has already been issued telling colleges not to have physical classes,” he said.

Several state governments ordered schools and universities to close due to the rise in Covid-19 cases. To combat the rising coronavirus cases, CM MK Stalin ordered the closure of all schools up to grade 9 on January 5. However, he had previously announced that physical classes for grades 10, 12 students would continue in the face of board exams and vaccination campaigns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 11 new Tamil Nadu government medical faculties and the new Central Institute of Classical Tamil campus in Chennai via videoconference today.

India saw a rise of 1,779,723 coronavirus infections in a single day, bringing the total to 3,57.07,727, including 4,033 cases of the Omicron variant so far reported in 27 states and union territories, according to an update from the Union Department of Health Dates on Mondays. The number of active cases has risen to 7,23,619, the highest in around 204 days.
