Middle overs problems continued for Sri Lanka when they lost six wickets in the 11-40 overs period, but left-handed batsmen Charith Asalanka and Chamika Karunaratne scored some late runs in the final power play to help their side a score of 275. to reach / 9 in the second one-day international match against India at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and fast bowler and runner-up Bhuvneshwar Kumar each took three wickets and helped India keep the hosts’ goal rate in check.
Similar to the first game, Team India failed to win a wicket in power play and Sri Lanka made the most of it as the opening games Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka looked much safer on Tuesday and made Indian bowlers pay if they missed theirs Lines and lengths.
Both Avishka and Minod appeared aggressive from the start, having played vigilantly for the first three overs, as they didn’t leave bad balls and played them on merit. The duo didn’t spawn a fifty-year partnership until after the eighth and had started dictating the terms. Sri Lanka was 59/0 after the initial power play and India was in dire need of a breakthrough as their early wicket problems plagued them again.
However, it was again leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who gave his team the first wicket when he sent Minod Bhanuka back and got him to play straight in the air to short mid-wicket outfield player Manish Pandey. It didn’t take Chahal much time to get his second when he returned Bhanuka Rajapaksa on the next delivery, leaving him behind.
Fernando brought up his half-century but dropped out shortly afterwards. Dhananjaya de Silva also got out after playing a measured stroke of 36 runs to increase the pace. The medium order problem for the Sri Lankan team remained as they lost a wicket every time they wanted to get fast runs and the run rate never went above 5.
The middle-tier batsman, Charith Asalanka, then played a rough stroke and got the scorecard ticking for his team before turning out his first fifty. He, along with Chamika Karunaratne, gave the late push to help Sri Lanka get a total of 275/9.
Deepak Chahar took a couple of wickets, aside from three-wicket halls from Chahal and Bhuvneshwar.
