With only a few days left for CAT, the question in the mind of almost all college students is “Can I still clear CAT?” and “What should be my preparation technique from now on?”
In fact, it requires some amount of effort and focus from your finish. However, trust me, cracking CAT is much easier than you might guess. With preparation and test-taking techniques, CAT writing can turn into an especially enjoyable specialization for you.
The biggest thing is that CAT should not be a knowledge based test. This is a temperament test. In a typical test, it doesn’t matter how much time you spend crafting formulas. In fact, it isn’t even needed. All you need is the presence and conceptual readability of your ideas.
Let me share a reliable plan which can allow you to crack CAT within a limited amount of time at your disposal. This plan guarantees that you are ready for D-Day and finish it at your optimum limits.
First of all start by clearing many misconceptions related to the exam.
fictional 1: CAT needs better conceptual data:
As already mentioned above, CAT is a general test and not a knowledge based test. Which means you shouldn’t miss a lot of issues. In fact, I would say that additional data does not necessarily mean that you will get a better rating in the CAT. It should be good to fix the question purely on the basis of the most original ideas. It generally doesn’t matter if you have studied English and Maths till class 10th.
fable 2: After only 15 days, it is no longer possible to measure percentiles any more:
How one goes in the last few days for CAT 2021 depends on where one is at that point of time when it comes to one’s mock scores. To better lay out the strategy, I’ll take a look at four different types of candidates –
- Those who are currently scoring less than 70% in their mocks,
- who are scoring anywhere between 70-85% of their mocks
- who are scoring anywhere between 85-95% of their mocks, and finally
- Which is 95% ile. scoring above
CAT Mocks. Scoring less than 70% in
If you are scoring around 60-65% ile or less, you have a practical chance of scoring 80% ile in CAT.
Let me share some info at the very beginning so that you don’t really feel that what I am saying is codeswlop. In CAT 2020 60% Ile Round was of 30 Marks and 80% Ile Round was of 48 Marks.
Next, to make that 20% ile bounce, you only need 18 extra points. Now if you had answered a question accurately that you just bought the wrong one you would have added four points to your rating.
Thus, 18 marks boils down to about 4-5 questions. Which is mainly 1 question/part followed by 1 addition to the power of your portion. Do you think you might get 1-2 more questions in the next 6-7 days? If the answer is sure, then the journey from 60 to 80 percentile is not very turbulent.
Focus on the fundamentals and inform yourself that the game in LRDI and Quant is about accuracy and in VARC it is about trying.
CAT Mocks. Scoring between 70%ile and 85%ile in
Over time, I have seen many college students scoring 90% ile on the CAT even though their percentile was as low as 70-75% ile only 1-2 weeks before the CAT.
Information means the difference between 75%ile and 90%ile is around 20-22 marks. Similarly between 85%ile and 95%ile one can also score around 20-22 marks. Thus, to overcome this hurdle you just need readability about what should be prepared and what should not.
For example, out of 26 (about 65%) in Quant, about 15-16 questions are from Arithmetic and Algebra. Similarly, in VARC, out of 18 RC questions, around 9-10 are factual questions i.e. solutions are from immediate passage. Understanding this will enable you to determine the right 7-day technique to crack the exam. Spend the following 2-3 days taking some mocks and check out the case from these particular areas again and again. This should allow you to brush up on these topics. Get it in the same time slot as your CAT exam.
Scoring between 85%ile and 95%ile in CAT Mocks
College students who are in this class have a practical chance of making it to 97% ile+. Please remember the fact that all the mock checks are written by anywhere between 5k to 20k candidates, whereas the CAT percentile depends on 2 lakh test takers. Many students who write the CAT are not important for test takers to review, thus leveling up your score.
Take a look at the abstract. Are you simulating CAT every time you follow? For example, in CAT, the quant part comes when your mind gets tired of a difficult DILR and suggestive VARC part. Is this what happens whenever you follow up at home? If not, scoring in case/partial check received at home does not imply your proficiency in mock or exact test. Ace to Simulation!
Scoring more than 95% marks in CAT Mocks
Candidates who are already scoring more than 95% should aim to get 99.5+% IEL. For example, 95%ile in Mocks is as good as 97.5percentile in CAT. Thus, the exact growth ranges from 97.5 percent to 99.5 percent which may be around 25-30 points.
For this once again a change in mindset is needed. That’s why it is advised to simulate the exact CAT situations whenever you take the mocks. It is advised to maintain your stamina through the paper. For example, if you really feel like you lose steam in the direction of the tip of the paper, one way to keep track of this is to do a 40-minute sectional test after you complete the mock. This can make it a paper of 2 hours 40 minutes instead of two hours and you will be able to build up your stamina due to this fact.
Preparation and Exam Techniques
You must have a look at revising all the important ideas present in various subjects in Quantitative Aptitude. It involves revising squares, cubes, square roots, dice roots, formulas and important theorems.
After revising the fundamentals of Quantitative Aptitude, it may be time to step on the pedals and get ‘match-practice’. As mentioned above, over these last few days, take one mock daily. This mock-taking train should be followed with in-depth mock evaluation on the same day.
Mock assessment should be a very detailed training where you not only look at the questions which you were not able to solve but also the questions which you were able to solve.
This can ensure that you will be able to discover sooner ways to fix the questions and due to this fact, will be able to maximize your effort and your rating. This comes as per your goal of getting 2-3 extra questions in each section.
For additional, quantitative aptitude, solve all the previous 12 months exact CAT questions. This means that all CAT questions are from 12 months of 1990 to the old version of CAT. Irrespective of how much you are scoring in your mock at the moment, this one is non-negotiable. Without knowing what kind of questions come in the exam, you cannot appear in the exam.
For VARC, within the mocks you give, make sure that you have solved all the questions of VARC. This is the ultimate objective for you in CAT exam. To have the ability to solve all the questions of VARC with around 70% accuracy.
For DILR, fractions and important Vedic maths questions that you might have read in the first week should help. Mock taking will help you develop the habit of recognizing better DI units.
Another thing that is important to mention here is that you should take all your mocks in the exact same time slot as your exact CAT exam time slot.
After 3-4 mocks it is possible for you to consolidate a technique for yourself and it is advisable to go through that technique in CAT.
Do not attempt any new mock within the last 2-3 days. Just take all the mocks that you have tried earlier and practice them. Re-solving your 2-3 worst mocks is a good suggestion as it will refresh all the errors that you have just made.
A light revision and glance through some of the earlier mocks can probably be useful. Quit any kind of studies in the last 2 days. Go and enjoy a great comedy movie in these three days. You need to rest your mind before giving CAT exam.
Milestone Strategy to Improve Your Percentile
Talking about what all the high scoring ones will do in CAT 2021, here is a quick recap of the calculations in hand.
Trying on the sectional percentile milestones, here is what they have been in CAT 2020
In CAT 2020, 60% ile round was at 30 marks, 80% ile round at 48 marks, 90% ile round at 63, 95% ile round at 76 and 99% on ile round 102.
Let’s look at these percentiles as milestones and see what needs to be done to move from one milestone to another.
You will need additional 18 marks to go from 60%ile to 80%ile. Going from 80% ile to 90% mile requires 15 extra points. Additional 13 marks may be required to move from 90%ile to 95%ile. And finally, to bounce from 95%ile to 99%ile, 26 extra points are needed.
Now, in the exam, there is one question wrong that you get right easily, that is the difference of four marks. Thus, each milestone is between 5-eight questions from the following. If you break it down sectionally it is about 2 questions per part away from the following milestone. So, the question is, can you get the 2 queries that you are finding inappropriate today, exactly in the next 6-7 days? The answer can be a mighty sure!
