Surface chemistry: Adsorption: physisorption and chemisorption, factors influencing the adsorption of gases in solids, colloidal state: differentiation between real solutions, colloids and suspensions; lyophilic, lyophobic, multimolecular and macromolecular colloids; Properties of colloids; Tyndall effect, Brownian motion, electrophoresis, coagulation.

Elements of the d and f block: General introduction, electron configuration, occurrence and Properties of transition metals, general trends in the properties of transition metals of the first row: metallic character, enthalpy of ionization, oxidation states, ionic radii, color, catalytic property, magnetic properties, interstitial compounds, alloy formation.

Lanthanoids: electron configuration, lanthanoid oxidation and contraction states and their Consequences.

Coordination connections: Coordination compounds: introduction, ligands, coordination number, color, magnetic properties and shapes, IUPAC nomenclature of mononuclear coordination compounds. Linkage, Werner Theory, VBT and CFT.

Aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids: Aldehydes and ketones: nomenclature, type of carbonyl group, manufacturing process, physical and chemical properties, nucleophilic addition mechanism, alpha-hydrogen reactivity in aldehydes, uses..

Carboxylic acids: Nomenclature, acidic nature, manufacturing process, physical and chemical properties; Applications.

Amines: Nomenclature, classification, structure, manufacturing process, physical and chemical properties, uses, identification of primary, secondary and tertiary amines.

PRACTICES METHODS EXERCISES

Term II: At the end of the second semester, a 15-point practice would be conducted under the supervision of external examiners appointed by the board. This would add to the overall practical grade for the subject.

OR

If the detention situation continues beyond December 2021, the external and internal examiners conduct a practical examination (pencil paper) of 10 points and Viva 5 points at the end of the second semester, and the external examiners and interns send the grades. Evaluation scheme of period II:

(1) Volumetric Analysis (4 points)

Determination of the concentration / molarity of the KMnO4 solution by titration against a standard solution of:

  1. Oxalic acid,
  2. Ferrous ammonium sulfate (students have to prepare standard solutions by weighing themselves).

(2) Salt analysis (qualitative analysis) (4 points)

Determination of a cation and an anion in a given salt.

(3) Content-based experiment

A. Manufacture of inorganic compounds

Production of double salt of iron (II) ammonium sulfate or potassium alum.

Manufacture of iron (III) potassium oxalate.

B. Assays for functional groups present in organic compounds: unsaturated, alcoholic, phenolic, aldehyde, ketone, carboxyl and (primary) amino groups.
