UNITY ALGEBRA

1. POLYNOMS

Definition of a polynomial in a variable, with examples and counter examples. Coefficients of a polynomial, terms of a polynomial, and zero polynomial. Degree of a polynomial. Constant, linear, quadratic, and cubic polynomials. Monomials, binomies, trinomials. Factors and multiples. Zeroing a polynomial. Factorization of ax2 + bx + c, a ≠ 0 where a, b and c are real numbers, and cubic polynomials using the factor set.

Remembering algebraic expressions and identities. Verification of identities

and their use in factoring polynomials.

UNIT GEOMETRY

1. (Prove) The diagonal divides a parallelogram into two congruent triangles.
2. (Motivate) In a parallelogram, opposite sides are the same and vice versa.
3. (Motivate) In a parallelogram, opposite angles are the same and vice versa.
4. (Motivate) A rectangle is a parallelogram when a pair of its opposite sides are parallel and equal.
5. (Motivate) In a parallelogram, the diagonals are halved and vice versa.
6. (Motivate) In a triangle, the line segment connecting the midpoints of two sides is parallel to the third side and in half of it and (motivates) its reverse.

3 CIRCLES

Examples take you to the definition of circle and related concepts – radius, circumference, diameter, chord, arc, secant, sector, segment, underlying angle.

1. (Prove) Equal chords of a circle limit equal angles in the middle and (motivate) their reversal.
2. (Motivate) The perpendicular from the center of a circle to a chord bisects the chord and vice versa is the line drawn through the center of a circle to bisect a chord, perpendicular to the chord.
3. (Motivate) Equal chords of a circle (or of congruent circles) are equidistant from the center (or their respective centers) and vice versa.
4. (Motivate) The angle made by an arc in the center is twice the angle made at any point on the rest of the circle.
5. (Motivate) Angles in the same segment of a circle are the same.
6. (Motivate) The sum of one of the two opposite angles of a cyclic quadrangle is 180 ° and its inverse.

4. CONSTRUCTIONS

1. Construction of bisectors of line segments and angles of 60˚, 90˚, 45˚ etc., equilateral triangles.
2. Construction of a triangle with a given base, sum / difference of the other two sides and a base angle.

5. SURFACES AND VOLUMES

Areas and volumes of cubes, cuboids, spheres (including hemispheres) and straight circular cylinders / cones.

6. LIKELIHOOD

History, repeated experiments, and observed frequency approximating the probability. The focus is on empirical probability. (Plenty of time for group and individual activities to motivate the concept; the experiments should be taken from real situations and from examples from the Statistics chapter).
