NEW DELHI: The Union government has informed the Supreme Court (SC) that it has decided to keep the existing reservation policy for the economically weaker section (EWS) regarding the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) All India Quota (AIQ), reports Live Law. The income limit for eligibility for the EWS quota is still Rs 8 lakh per year.

The court agreed to hear pleadings against the July 29 notice regarding the reservation for the NEET AIQ academic session 2021-22 on September 17, 2021. On October 21st, the SC asked the center if it was the limit of Rs 8 lakh. want to reconsider annual income to determine the EWS category. The government informed the SC in November of its decision to review the criteria for determining the EWS category in NEET AIQ.

According to a panel of experts from the central government, complications will arise if the EWS reservation is ruled out in the middle of the process. Instead, the committee proposed the introduction of revised EWS criteria from the coming academic year. The center told the oversight committee in its affidavit that it had decided to follow these recommendations, Live Law reported.

The committee recommended revisions include the annual income criteria of Rs 8 lakh for the EWS category, but exclude reservations for family members with agricultural land of five acres or more regardless of income.
