Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UNSC

India will take over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council’s Anti-Terrorism Committee in January 2022 after 10 years.

  • The Anti-Terrorism Committee was founded by Security Council Resolution 1373 was adopted unanimously on September 28, 2001, following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
  • The committee was charged with Monitoring the implementation of Resolution 1373 which requested countries implement a range of measures aimed at enhancing their legal and institutional capabilities to combat terrorist activities domestically and globally.
  • This includes ingestion Take steps to criminalize terrorist financing, freeze funds related to individuals involved in acts of terrorism, deny any form of financial assistance to terrorist groups, suppress the provision of safe havens, supply or support terrorists, and share information with other governments about any groups that carry out or plan terrorist attacks.
  • The committee oversees Take steps to cooperate with other governments in the investigation, detection, arrest, extradition and prosecution of those involved in acts of terrorism and criminalize active and passive aid to terrorism.
