The use of space heating increases with the colder temperatures. The more heaters are in use, the greater the risk of fire.
After 17 people died in a fire in an apartment in the Bronx, fire departments across the country are reminding residents to be aware of safety issues when installing space heating. Here are some preventative tips from the Rockford Fire Department:
Heaters are the leading cause of house fires in the US They are responsible for more than 25,000 residential fires and deaths annually, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Make sure your heaters are approved to one of the national standards before turning on your space heater
“Our ultimate goal is to provide education, enforcement and technical aspects to ensure tragedies like this don’t happen in our city or elsewhere,” said Matthew Knott. The Rockford Fire Department chief said fires can happen anywhere and preparation can prevent them.
Make sure that the space heater cannot tip over. Do not use an extension cord; Plug the space heater directly into the socket
Have the chimney cleaned and checked. Keep a distance of 3 feet. Sleep with the door closed
