Unit-I: Classification and taxonomic characteristics of arable fisheries, crustaceans and mollusks. Freshwater, brackish water and marine fisheries resources of India, Marine fisheries of the world. Estuarine, lacustrine, brackish water and pond ecosystems. Methods and analysis of population dynamics, fish stocks, abundance. Conservation and management of fish resources. Fishing legislation and the law of the sea. Effects of overexploitation and climate change on fish resources.
Unit II: Breeding and breeding behavior, brood stock improvement, maturity and fertility studies in fish and shellfish. Induced spawning methods and seed production, natural fish seed collection and rearing methods. Types of eggs and development of larval stages of fin fish and shellfish. Preparation and management of freshwater and saltwater fish ponds. Identification of cultivable species, introduction of exotic fishes in India. Culture methods: pen and cage farming practices, crap and shrimp hatchery management, basic aspects of biotechnology in relation to fisheries.
Unit-IIIImportant limnological, oceanographic and biological parameters of lotic and lentic waters in relation to their impact on fisheries, biological productivity and fisheries. Environmental impact assessment on fisheries in lentil and lotic waters. Biological parameters including energy flow, community ecology and aquatic association, biodiversity and its conservation, aquatic pollution and its management.

Unit IV: The general craft and gear used for fishing. Boat building materials and demerits of wood, steel, aluminium, ferro cement and FRP. Different types of fiber and mesh materials and their characteristics, protection of nets, parts of a trammel net, purse-seine, gill net and tuna long line. Fundamentals of food chemistry, microbiology. Common methods of fish protection and fisheries by products. Canning and packaging technology, processing and product development technology.
Unit-V: Introduction to the concepts of fisheries economics and cooperative, marketing and banking management. Supply versus demand economics of hatchery management and fish farming operations. Taking profits to the maximum. Problems in estimating costs and returns in fisheries. WTO agreements in the fisheries sector, Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and international fish trade; Methods of fish expansion. There is a need for training and education in fisheries. communication concepts, modern tools of fisheries extension education, participatory rural assessment (PRA), rapid rural assessment (RRA), role of women in fisheries; Basics of statistics in fisheries and computer science.
