The 2021 batch is promoted to the next grade without taking the board exams, however those who failed last year and should come back for the board exams this year are pending. The government of the state of Karnataka has announced that repeat offenders will have to take exams and dates will be announced. Now repeat offenders have tried the Karnataka Supreme Court against Education Minister Suresh Kumar for not promoting them like first-time visitors.
The subject is very confusing, says Veena Mohan, educator. “The schools have completed revisions for regular students. Although there are online courses for repeaters, there is no clarity about how and when the exams will be taken. The current exam pattern, in which six subjects are squeezed into two papers, is in itself very unscientific. Since this is expected to be the case in July-August, repeaters may be switched on in September or even later. In any case, they lost a whole year. Colleges have already started admission and these kids are now completely lost, “says Mohan.
There are several cases where students did not take an online course at all. That means they don’t even know what the curriculum was for the year. If there were regular classes, many would have a shortage of participants. How can we move such students to the next grade if they are not ready? Ask teachers.
According to the data from the SSLC board, there are around 30,000 repeaters in Karnataka this year. Many would have missed a fraction of the grades, but still have to take the exam. The format of the exams for repeat offenders remains to be determined, which only adds to the current mystery, says D Shashi Kumar, secretary of the Karnataka Private School Association.
According to experts, the solution lies in changing academic patterns. “There is no rule that an academic year should start in June and end in March. The government has the power to change this pattern of the British era. The academic year can start in January and end in December. So if there is another wave, as everyone says, there are at least some classes in between and the loss can be minimal, “says Veena Mohan.
She recalls a situation in 1990 when several colleges made it clear that Bangalore University students did not need to apply because of major exam fraud at the university that year. Even students who pass out in 2021 can face a similar situation that will have a huge impact on their studies, careers, and life in itself.
The unscientific distribution of grades is sure to hit hard-working students. Experts believe that anyone planning to study at renowned universities will surely have to overcome a number of hurdles.
The situation is no different in the state of Telangana. With Covid-19 cases increasing day by day, the Telangana government has decided to cancel the annual 10th and middle school exams in order to promote students to higher grades. All students will be promoted to their next grade for the 2021-22 academic year. The state government had previously canceled the grade 10 exams and it is decided that students will be graded using a methodology developed by the Committee on Secondary Education. Similarly, intermediate exams in the 1st and 2nd year have also been canceled and the students are promoted to the next level.
In the meantime, the state government is setting guidelines for students nearing IIT and EEE approval. There will shortly be a set of guidelines on the steps universities must follow in admitting these candidates.
