There are several versions of the IELTS exam. IELTS General and IELTS Academic Training are the two most popular variants. Candidates need to prepare for IELTS by considering the test pattern and curriculum.

IELTS exam curriculum 2022

The IELTS exam syllabus states that all candidates must complete four modules – listening, reading, writing, and speaking – in order to receive a tape grade, which will be displayed on the IELTS test report (TRF) form.

The listening and speaking modules are the same for all candidates, but the reading and writing modules differ depending on whether they are taking the academic or general training version of the test.


Listening: This section consists of four sections that increase the level of difficulty. Each section, which can be either a monologue or a dialogue, begins with a brief explanation of the situation and the speakers for the aspirants. Then you have some time to go through the questions. A pause in the middle of the first three sections allows the aspirant to review the remaining questions. Each category can only be heard once.

Reading: The reading test in the academic module is divided into three sections with three texts followed by 13 or 14 questions for a total of 40 questions. The general test also consists of three sections. However, since the texts are shorter, up to five can be read.

Writing: There are two assignments in the academic module: Assignment 1 requires candidates to describe a process, graph, diagram or diagram, and Assignment 2 requires them to respond to an argument. There are two tasks in the General Training module: Task 1 requires the aspirants to write a letter or explain a situation, and Task 2 requires them to write an essay.

Speaking of which

The language test is divided into three sections. The first section is an interview where candidates are asked about their hobbies, interests and reasons for taking the IELTS exam, as well as other general topics such as leisure, clothing, computers and the internet, and family.

The aspirants are given a topic card in the second section and have a minute to prepare before discussing the topic. Guidelines for the 2022 IELTS Reading Exam

All aspirants must read three texts with a length of 2,150 to 2,750 words.

The difficulty of the texts and questions increases.

All answers should be written on the answer sheet within 60 minutes. (Zero points)

A grade is given for each question.

There is no penalty for wrong answers.

Knowing the spelling is important – you can use both British and American spelling.

There is no time limit for the transfer.

Components of IELTS reading

Books, advertisements, magazines, advertisements, newspapers, magazines, company manuals and guidelines are used to create the texts.

Part 1

Part 1 (Introduction): This section of the test takes 4-5 minutes and aspirants may need to provide longer answers to questions to demonstrate their best skills. In Part 1, the examiner will ask questions that require the examinee to talk about themselves, likes and dislikes, etc.

Part 2

Part 2 (individual interview): The aspirant receives a verbal request on a card and is asked to speak about a specific topic. Before being asked to speak for up to 2 minutes, you have a minute to prepare. The examiner then asks a rounding question or two.

Part 3 (Discussion Topics): The candidate and examiner discuss more abstract concepts and issues related to the topic in Part 2. The conversation takes about 4 to 5 minutes. The examiner will ask questions that reveal the test-taker’s opinions and viewpoints. Answers part 3 will be longer and more detailed than the first.
