“CUCET is only a great alternative for performance-based admissions if it has been announced earlier, but rushing to implement it during the pandemic will have a negative impact on us,” wrote a 12th grade student in an open letter. In her letter, Shirsty Deka calls for clarity on Delhi University’s admissions process: the university has shown a tendency to consider CUCET as one of the options for student admission, but it is not yet officially known which subjects the entrance exam would apply to and whether they have the performance-related approvals.
The letter also stated that due to the cancellation of the examinations before a committee, a large number of students will now appear for the physical exams with the implementation of the CUCET and that this sounds “hypocritical”. Also, taking the common entrance exam will only add to the stress as there is “no clarity on the curriculum.”
The student also claims that several JEE and NEET students would keep general courses as backup options and would find it difficult to prepare for both CUCET and JEE / NEET. Only students who are already preparing for the entrance test and who have a good internet connection benefit from CUCET, according to the letter.
A group of academics had also previously raised concerns about the implementation of CUCET. Standard entrance exams may be unfavorable for the upper class and for those who have studied in regional languages, claimed a DU professor
The student also said that if the exam was announced now, there would not be enough time to prepare, so it was practically impossible to “gather resources in a short time”. If the authorities had informed about the exam a year ago, students could have prepared for the exams and would have been mentally and physically ready, it said.
“Most students are preparing for board exams, and DU candidates generally aim for a score of 97 percent or more. However, as the exams have been canceled, many students who are not satisfied with the grades have to appear for the optional written exam. The letter also states that admission may only take place after these written examinations have been completed. “If necessary, interviews or personality tests can be carried out in order to subject the applicants to a screening test,” suggested the students in an open letter.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Ministry of Education has yet to decide whether CUCET will take place this year. Students ask for clarity about this.
