Melbourne [Australia], 22 Sep (ANI): A new study from USC, University of South Australia and University of Queensland has provided a better understanding of what affects fussy eaters, and picks, in children under 10 years of age. What is more likely to increase or decrease the intake. .
The research findings were published in the ‘International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health’.
Whether it’s a special appetite for ‘white’ foods or an outright refusal on vegetables, when you have fussy hands, meal times can be more of a challenge.
While picky eating is part of the norm for a child’s development, when it extends to the school years, it falls on all involved children and parents alike.
Reviewing 80 health industry studies, the research found that several factors contributed to a child’s likelihood of fussy eating.
The study found that pressuring a child to eat, giving rewards for eating, too strict parenting all negatively affected fussy eaters.
Conversely, a more relaxed parenting style, eating together as a family, and involving a child in meal preparation reduced the likelihood of fussy eating.
Lead researcher and USC PhD student Line Chilman said the research is expected to help parents and caregivers better understand fussy eating in children.
“For parents with avid eaters, meal times can be especially stressful — family meals and a picky eater are no small tasks,” Chillman said.
“Some families have kids who turn their nose up at any vegetable. Others are dealing with kids who dislike certain textures or colors of food,” Chillman explained.
“Some of these preferences are related to a child’s characteristics or personality, which are difficult to change, if at all. But there are other external factors that can help reduce fussy eating in children,” Chillman continued.
“As a family, eating with siblings, and having the same meals at regular times, all helped reduce food cravings. As with introducing fussy toddlers to meals, either Helping choose menus or helping with food preparation,” Chillman said.
“Yet if the fussy eaters were allowed to eat in front of the TV, or if they were rewarded for eating certain foods, these behaviors negatively affected the picky children,” Chillman said.
According to the Australian Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey, most children do not meet recommended dietary and nutritional guidelines.
UNISA researcher Dr Ann Kennedy-Behr said stress may contribute to fussy eating.
“When you have a child who is a picky eater, it is very stressful for the parent or caregiver – they always question whether their child is getting enough nutrients, enough food and often Gaining enough weight,” said Dr. Kennedy-Behr.
“Yet it’s important to understand that being overly anxious or anxious can actually increase picky eating,” Kennedy-Behr said.
Dr. Kennedy-Behr explained, “Everyone will benefit from avoiding being crossed and limiting any negativity around meal time. Positive parents, given how difficult it can be in some situations, for fussy people.” The best move.”
