Part A: Fundamentals of Physical Geography – (15 Marks)

Unit IV: Climate

– atmosphere – composition and structure; Elements of weather and climate

– angle of incidence and distribution of irradiation; Heat balance of the earth Warming and cooling of the atmosphere (conduction, convection, earth radiation and advection); Temperature factors that control temperature; Temperature distribution – horizontal and vertical; Temperature reversal

– pressure-pressure tapes; Winds-planetary, seasonal and local; Air masses and fronts; tropical and extra-tropical cyclones

– precipitation evaporation; Condensation, frost, fog, mist and clouds; Types of precipitation and world distribution

Unit V: Water (oceans) – 4 marks

– Movements of sea water waves, tides and currents; Submarine reliefs

– marine resources and pollution

Unit VI: Life on Earth – 3 Marks

– Biosphere – meaning of plants and other organisms; Biodiversity and nature conservation.

Part B: India – Physical Environment (15 Marks)

Unit III: Climate, Vegetation and Soil (15 Marks)

– Weather and climate – spatial and temporal distribution of temperature, pressure winds and precipitation, Indian monsoon: mechanism, beginning and retreat, variability of precipitation: spatial and temporal; Use of weather maps

– Natural vegetation-forest types and distribution; wild life; Conservation; Biosphere reserves

– Soils – main types (ICAR classification) and their distribution, soil degradation and conservation

Map work to identify / interpolate features based on the units on the physical / political map of the world / India (5 marks)

Part C: Practical work (15 points)

CH 6: Introduction to aerial photography

CH 7: Introduction to Remote Sensing.

CH 8: Weather instruments, maps and maps
