Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said the state is against the NEET (National Entrance Cum Eligibility Test) and will fight to get it abolished. However, he added that students need to prepare for the upcoming exam for the time being. At a press conference on Monday, the Minister of Health said: “DMK’s position on the abolition of NEET is final. There are no two options. We are determined to scrap it. However, we currently have no legal support for it and are fighting in court to have it abolished. However, students must take their NEET lessons. “
The Minister of Health also added that the previous AIADMK government under Edappadi K Palanisamy was not successful for legal reasons when it came to lifting NEET. “We (the government of Tamil Nadu) are fighting in court for NEET to be abolished. However, if we fail in court, we don’t want students to complain about not being prepared for NEET. Right now we suggest that students take their lessons and prepare for the exam, ”he said.
This year the NEET is to take place on September 12th. The application process to take the exam begins on Tuesday, July 13th, at 5 p.m. via the National Testing Agency (NTA) website. As soon as the registration process begins, candidates can apply for NEET UGC 2021 via ntaneet.nic.in.
Tamil Nadu has always been an opponent of NEET as it puts students who do not speak English at a disadvantage when passing the exam. State Board students from Tamil Nadu find NEET a particular challenge as they have to ask questions in English or Hindi. Additionally, the NEET paper follows a CBSE curriculum that further discriminates against State Board medical aspirants, as the Tamil Nadu State Education Board and CBSE curricula are quite different.
The abolition of NEET was an election promise made by the DMK, and after the government came to power, the government set up a high-level committee led by the retired Madras Supreme Court Justice AK Rajan to assess the impact of NEET on Tamil Nadu investigate, especially for medical aspirants from the marginalized groups of the state. Thereupon the secretary of the BJP Tamil Nadu, K Nagarajan, filed a case in the HC Madras in which he questioned the constitution of this committee. On July 5, additional attorney general R Sankaranarayanan filed a counter-oath on the case filed by the TN BJP secretary.
