Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UPSC has postponed the public service pre-audit from the original schedule of June 27th to October 10th. It has given aspirants more than 100 days more time to prepare for the exam.
Having an extra window of time to prepare just before the exam may be a blessing for most of us, but haven’t we all wasted the long gaps between exams in our school and college days? This loophole harbors an additional risk of deviating from the path of optimal preparation.
There are 2 possible categories based on the preparations by June when it comes to the 2021 Prelims:
1. Those who were sure they wouldn’t make it to the exam.
2. Those who did not fall into the first category, i.e. at least had a chance, or better, the selection was certain if the examination was not carried out until June.
If you are in the first category, you cannot suffer any loss from that extra time. This could be your only chance to seize the opportunity and create this additional opportunity for you. You need to focus mainly on current affairs (from May 2020 to September 10, 2021), politics, the environment, geography and economics. You need to practice at least 100 MCQs daily and make sure you revise all of these questions every week. The core idea is to expand the curriculum coverage to a level where you can confidently solve 50-60 questions.
If you fall into the second category, that extra time carries a lot of additional risks for you. You mustn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Focus on your strengths and try to get strong in just one of your weaker subjects. For example, if you were excellent at polis and were rather weak at history and geography, please make sure that your control over polis is not weakened and focus on capturing one of the weak subjects, not both. If you reschedule your preparation, there is a chance that you will also lose your lead in your strengths. You need to make sure that you have to practice as much as you can to keep your head start.
Also, try to practice in the actual exam conditions to make sure you get rid of the common fear-related mistakes.
During this additional time, many aspirants asked about the preparation of the elective. It’s an interesting idea considering you only have 89 days between Prelims and Mains this year. In any case, it is advisable to finish at least one thesis of your elective before the prelims, but you must be careful that this preparation does not in any case exceed September 10th. Until then, if you are reasonably confident about completing the prelims, you can focus on preparing your elective. Please don’t try
Reply letter for GS before the prelims. It distracts your attention unnecessarily from the prelims orientation and is counterproductive to your prelims creation.
Regardless of your level of preparation, please do not take the Paper 2 of Prelims for granted. We recommend everyone, including those for whom the proficiency tests are very easy, to complete at least 10 complete task sheets from CSAT Paper 2. If you achieve a total of more than 70% score
there is nothing to be done of them. If you are in the 50-70% group, find your vulnerabilities and work on them. If you are below 50%, you must properly prepare yourself for this work section by section.
In the end, it is very important to make sure that you stay healthy both physically and mentally. These are difficult times for everyone and it might be difficult to be happy. Remember, you are preparing for bigger goals and this is preparation that can change your life. Take every day as it comes and try to get the most out of it.
